POD X3 Live Tips and Tricks: Switching between amps 1 and 2

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Three things are on the mind of most new X3 owners:

  • How do I switch between amp 1 and amp 2?
  • The silent gap when I switch patches is killing me!
  • Where are my spillover delay and reverb?

We can kill all of these birds with one stone. The key is using the volume pedal. If you have an X3L (X3 Live) you are set with everything you need. X3 (bean) owners will need the FBV Shortboard or some other footcontroller solution. I’ve listed some below that should work with your X3. Here is how to switch between amp 1 and amp 2 while eliminating the silence during a patch switch: (more…)

POD X3 Live Tips and Tricks: Phantom Power

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

The POD X3 does not include phantom power on its mic preamp. In a live situation this is not too bad since the majority of vocalists are singing through stage friendly dynamic mics. The POD really has its roots in the studio though, so the lack of phantom power can be limiting to those wanting to do some serious vocal tracking using the X3. Below you will find links to a few low cost (more…)

POD X3 Live Tips and Tricks: Solo Boost

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

It is nice to get a bit of a boost during guitar solos when playing live. Changing patches is the easy solution but that leaves you a bit of a gap in the audio. I’m going to outline a few ways in which you can get a nice volume boost using a single patch, no audio gaps! I’m going to outline the tips and techniques in terms of the controls available on the X3 Live but they will all apply to the X3 bean as well, as long as you have an appropriate foot controller.

For our purposes, a clean solo boost is a volume boost to your solo that does not change your tone at all. In order to apply a clean solo boost (more…)

X3 Master Volume

This is the main volume for everything. It is kind of like the master fader on a mixer. It controls the outputs of your X3 including the headphone jack. Master Volume has no effect on tone. Line 6 recommend running this as high as possible and this is a good idea from a theoretical standpoint to minimize your (more…)

POD X3 Live Tips and Tricks: Dual Tone Wah

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

I’ve been having a blast with my new POD X3 Live. The dual tone feature is so much fun to play with. In general, using different things on each of your two tones will fill out the sound and give it more character. Something I tried today was using a different wah pedal on each of the two tones. I set up my blend (a dual tone designed to work on the same input) with tone 1 panned about 25% left and tone 2 about 25% right. Then it was time to play with the wah pedals. I tried a bunch of different combinations but my current favorite is the Fassel (Cry Baby Super by Jen Electronics) on tone 1 and the Colorful (Colorsound Wah-Fuzz, without the fuzz part) on tone 2. The Colorful was gives a very dramatic sweep while the Fassel provides a more consistent tonal grounding.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the wah. I liked little bits of different wahs but never found one that was 100% what I was looking for. Using a different wah on each tone of my blend gave me the best of two worlds of wah.

Leave a comment with your favorite combination!
