POD Patches - Lincoln Brewster

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

The fabled Lincoln Brewster POD patches are one of the most often requested items in the Line 6 community. Here are screenshots of them for those of you who are unable to use Line 6 Edit on your machines!

Don’t feel like sifting through dozens of patches? I’ve created compact patch files that take into account all the commonalities of Lincoln Brewster’s tone and made a small downloadable package with the Gearbox files. Get it from my other page about Lincoln Brewster’s guitar tones.

POD Patches - Dual Tone Demos (Part 1)

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

These tones were inspired by the Line 6 dual tone tour. I’m not going to be so pretentious as to claim my tones are better, but I didn’t want to copy their tones. I just wanted to use them as jumping off points to create something entirely new. I approached this exercise by taking the signal paths they used and their descriptions and filtering those through my own experiences and tone preferences. I hope you enjoy the presets (the bundle is available Show me the presets already »

POD X3 Live Patches: Tracking Lead Guitar for “Stumpy Ron”

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Today I worked on recording the guitar solo for The Ballad of Stumpy Ron. Of course my Line 6 POD X3 Live is all over that! I wanted the solo to sound a bit like Tony Iommi with a little C.C. DeVille sprinkled on top and be very energetic in timbre. Strange mix, I know, but that’s what was going through my mind. I set up the X3 with a dual tone blend having a fair emphasis Show me the preset already! »

POD X3 Live Tips and Tricks: Solo Boost

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

It is nice to get a bit of a boost during guitar solos when playing live. Changing patches is the easy solution but that leaves you a bit of a gap in the audio. I’m going to outline a few ways in which you can get a nice volume boost using a single patch, no audio gaps! I’m going to outline the tips and techniques in terms of the controls available on the X3 Live but they will all apply to the X3 bean as well, as long as you have an appropriate foot controller.

For our purposes, a clean solo boost is a volume boost to your solo that does not change your tone at all. In order to apply a clean solo boost (more…)

POD X3 Live Patches: Tracking Guitars for “Stumpy Ron”

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I’m currently working on recording final tracks for a song titled The Ballad of Stumpy Ron. The overall sound and feel of the song draw heavily on Black Sabbath but fall somewhere between there and Wolfmother. My new POD X3 heavily influenced my approach for tracking this song. I decided to try recording two guitar tracks, but each track would actually be two tracks using the awesome dual tone capabilities of the X3. The POD X3 has eight outputs over its digital USB connection. Outs 3-4 are Tone 1 L-R, while outs 5-6 are Tone 2 L-R. I set my DAW up On To The Patches »

POD X3 Live Tips and Tricks: Dual Tone Wah

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

I’ve been having a blast with my new POD X3 Live. The dual tone feature is so much fun to play with. In general, using different things on each of your two tones will fill out the sound and give it more character. Something I tried today was using a different wah pedal on each of the two tones. I set up my blend (a dual tone designed to work on the same input) with tone 1 panned about 25% left and tone 2 about 25% right. Then it was time to play with the wah pedals. I tried a bunch of different combinations but my current favorite is the Fassel (Cry Baby Super by Jen Electronics) on tone 1 and the Colorful (Colorsound Wah-Fuzz, without the fuzz part) on tone 2. The Colorful was gives a very dramatic sweep while the Fassel provides a more consistent tonal grounding.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the wah. I liked little bits of different wahs but never found one that was 100% what I was looking for. Using a different wah on each tone of my blend gave me the best of two worlds of wah.

Leave a comment with your favorite combination!
